# Log an Interaction

> Add a coffee, call, or visit to someone's record by hand.

Some conversations never reach Groupthink on their own. A coffee, a phone call, a weekend a friend spends at your house. **Log interaction** is the way to put one into the record yourself, and it updates the same Last met and Status columns everything else keys off.

These steps cover the web app at [app.groupthink.com](https://app.groupthink.com) and the Groupthink desktop app, which show the same screens.

## Log one

1. Click **Relationships** in the left sidebar.
2. Hover the person's row and click the **Log interaction** icon. You can also open the person first and use **Log interaction** on their page.
3. Fill in what you have. Every field except the person and the date is optional.
4. Click **Save**.

If you would rather type one sentence and skip the form, use [the capture box](/docs/quick_log) in the sidebar instead.

## The fields

| Field | What it is |
| --------------------------------- | ---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- |
| **Also with…** | Other people who were there. Everyone you add gets the same interaction on their record. |
| **Title (optional)** | A short label, like "Q2 check-in". You can save with only a title and no notes, when the title is the whole story. |
| **Date** | The day it happened. Defaults to today. |
| **Through** | The last day, for something that ran longer than a day. See below. |
| **How did it happen? (optional)** | **In person**, **Phone**, **Text**, **Email**, or **Other**. |
| **Interaction notes (optional)** | Any format: raw notes, a Granola export, a pasted transcript, a Slack thread. Groupthink reads it and pulls out what it can. |

## Something that lasted several days

A friend staying at your house Thursday through Saturday, or a trip you took together, is one interaction that covers several days.

1. Set **Date** to the first day.
2. Click **+ End date** underneath it.
3. A **Through** field appears. Set it to the last day.

The timeline and Past Interactions then label it by its days: "Sep 10 – 12".

A few details:

- **Through** can't be earlier than **Date**, and a single interaction can cover at most 90 days.
- Click the **✕** next to **Through** to go back to a single day.
- Everyone on **Also with…** gets the same span.
- You can log a visit while it is still going. Enter the day it ends, and Groupthink counts you as in contact through today, then through the end day once it arrives.
- An interaction you already saved can't gain an end date yet, so set the span when you log it.

## What changes after you save

- The person's recency moves to the day it happened, or to the last day of a span.
- **In person** and **Phone** count as a live conversation, so they move the **Last meeting** column. **Text**, **Email** and **Other** count as contact without a meeting, so they move **Last contact** and leave Last meeting where it was. Either one counts as staying in touch.
- The **Status** chip and the **Going Cold** filter recalculate against the cadence you set. See [Staying in Touch](/docs/staying_in_touch).
- The interaction appears on the person's timeline, and in Past Interactions.

## Logging something that hasn't happened yet

If you set **Date** to a day in the future, Groupthink treats it as a plan rather than something that happened. It counts toward when you are next seeing the person, and it leaves Last met alone. This is useful when you have plans that were never a calendar invite.

## Frequently Asked Questions

### Do I have to write notes?

No. A title on its own is enough, and so is a date with nothing else.

### Can I log the same thing for several people at once?

Yes. Add them under **Also with…** and each person gets the interaction, including the span if you set one.

### Can I change the dates after saving?

Not yet. Log the interaction with the days you want it to cover.
