Use Your Own Anthropic Key

Connect an Anthropic API key so Groupthink reads your notes on your own Anthropic account, and get Pro for $5 a month.

On this page

You can connect your own Anthropic API key to Groupthink. While a key is connected and working, much of the AI work Groupthink does for you runs on your key, and Anthropic bills that usage to your Anthropic account.

You can use your own key on any plan. Connecting a key does not change the Free plan: recording new meetings and the Advisor still need Pro.

Groupthink takes an Anthropic key. Keys from other AI providers are not accepted here.

Pro on your own key

Pro on your own key is Pro for $5 a month. Your Anthropic key does the reading, and the $5 pays for what can't run on your key, such as recording meetings and search.

  • Pro is on only while your key works. If you remove your key, or Anthropic stops accepting it, Pro turns off until a working key is connected again. You are still subscribed while Pro is off.
  • Recorded meeting time has a monthly limit. See Recorded hours each month.
  • It is monthly only. There is no annual price for this plan.
  • Buy it on the web. The plan is sold in the Billing section of Groupthink on the web. The iPhone app does not sell it.

To start it:

  1. Add your key and make sure it works.
  2. Open User Settings > Account > Billing.
  3. On the Pro on your own key card, click Start with your own key.
  4. Confirm on the Stripe checkout page.

If you have no working key yet, the card says so and shows Connect your key in place of Start with your own key. If you already pay for Pro, the Billing section does not offer this plan.

Recorded hours each month

On Pro on your own key, the hours of meetings you can record each month are limited. The Billing section shows how many hours you have recorded this month, out of how many, and the day the count starts over.

  • The hours count meetings you sent the Groupthink notetaker to and private recordings you made with the desktop app.
  • The month is a calendar month in UTC, so the count starts over on the 1st.
  • Once you reach the limit, new recordings do not start until the count starts over. A recording that is already running is not stopped.

Create an Anthropic key

  1. Sign in to the Anthropic Console at console.anthropic.com.
  2. Open the API keys page and create a new key.
  3. Copy the key. An Anthropic API key starts with sk-ant-.

Add the key to Groupthink

  1. Open User Settings > Connections > Developer. This link opens the collapsed Developer group for you.
  2. To get there by hand instead, click your name at the bottom of the sidebar, choose User settings, open the Connections tab, and click Show on the Developer card.
  3. In the AI Provider Key section, paste your key into the API key field.
  4. Click Save key.

Groupthink only accepts a key that starts with sk-ant-. When you save, Groupthink tests the key with Anthropic straight away and shows whether it works. The field then clears, and the key itself is not shown again.

To swap in a different key, paste it into the Replace API key field and click Update key.

Check that the key works

Click Test key in the AI Provider Key section. Groupthink checks the key with Anthropic and shows a green message if the key works, or a red one if Anthropic did not accept it. If Anthropic could not be reached, the message says the check did not finish and nothing about your key changed. Try again in a few minutes.

What runs on your key

While your key is connected and working, these run on it:

  • Reading the notes, texts and email you capture, to find the people and details in them.
  • Reading the photos and PDFs you upload.
  • Summaries of the meetings you created in Groupthink.
  • The Advisor's answers.

Recording meetings, live transcription, turning uploaded audio into text, and search still run on Groupthink.

Groupthink picks the Claude model for each task.

See your usage

Usage on your key is billed by Anthropic, not by Groupthink. To see how much your key has used and what it has cost, open the usage and billing pages in the Anthropic Console.

Remove your key

  1. Open User Settings > Connections > Developer.
  2. In the AI Provider Key section, click Remove key....
  3. Click Remove key to confirm.

After that, the work listed above runs on Groupthink again. On Pro on your own key, Pro is off until you connect a working key again; the confirmation says so before you remove it.

Removing the key from Groupthink does not cancel it at Anthropic. To stop the key working everywhere, delete it in the Anthropic Console as well.

Use an AI assistant to manage your key

If you connected an AI assistant through the Groupthink MCP server, it can save, check and remove your key for you with set_anthropic_key, check_anthropic_key and remove_anthropic_key.

A key saved this way starts out untested. On Pro on your own key, Pro stays on only after you click Test key on the AI Provider Key card. Your assistant's check does not count as that test.

If your key stops working

If Anthropic refuses your key, for example because the key was revoked or the account ran out of credit, Groupthink marks it as not working straight away:

  • The request that hit the problem is still answered, on Groupthink's models. If it was an Advisor question, the reply ends with Answered on Groupthink's key; yours stopped working.
  • Groupthink stops trying the key until it works again.
  • The AI Provider Key section shows when the key stopped working, with Test again and Replace key.
  • On Pro on your own key, Pro is off from that moment. The Billing section says so and links to the key with Fix your key.

Once the key is fixed, click Test again, or paste a new key and save it. A key that passes the test is used again, and on Pro on your own key, Pro turns back on.
