Signing in to Groupthink

Sign in with Google, Microsoft, Apple, or an email link.

On this page

You can sign in to Groupthink on the web at app.groupthink.com/signin. You do not need a password. You sign in with an identity provider or a one-time email link, and the same options create your account the first time you use them. If you would like a password as well, you can add one in Settings after you sign in. See Setting or changing a password.

Ways to sign in

  • Continue with Google: sign in with your Google account. If you connect Google Calendar, Groupthink can see your meetings and their conferencing links.
  • Continue with Microsoft: sign in with your Microsoft (work or personal) account, with the same calendar options as Google. A work or school address has to be on a domain your organization has verified with Microsoft. See If Continue with Microsoft is refused.
  • Continue with Apple: sign in with your Apple ID. Choose this if you prefer to keep your email private or already use Apple sign-in elsewhere.
  • Sign in with email: below the provider buttons (on the sign-up page it reads Continue with email). Enter your email address and we'll send you a one-time magic link. Click the link and you're signed in. The sign-in page also has an optional Password field. If you have set a password, type it there to sign in directly. Otherwise leave it blank and we'll email you the link. The link works once. See If your sign-in link does not work.

Your first sign-in with any of these creates your Groupthink account automatically.

A sign-in link works once, and for a limited time. The email says how long: about 10 minutes for a sign-in link, and about 24 hours for the link in the welcome email you get when you sign up.

If you open a link that has already been used, the page says We couldn't sign you in. It explains that the sign-in link didn't work because it may have expired or already been used, and that you can head back to sign in for a fresh one. Click Back to sign in, enter your email address, and use the new link.

If you are already signed in on that browser, opening a used link takes you into Groupthink.

If the page says That sign-in link has expired, it does one of two things.

  • It sends you a new link. The page says "We sent a new link to" and an email address, then "Open the newest email to continue." Open that email and use the link in it. The new link goes to the address last used to ask for a sign-in link in this browser. On a shared computer that may be someone else's address, so check the address the page shows. If it is not yours, click Go Back and enter your own.
  • It asks you to get a new link. The page says "Sign-in links only work for a short time. Enter your email again and we’ll send you a new one." No email has been sent yet. Click Get a new link, enter your email address, and use the link we send. You see this when you open the link in a different browser or on a different device from the one you asked for it in. You also see it when more than an hour has passed since you asked for the link, or when someone has signed in on that browser since.

If the page says "We couldn't send a new link to" and your address, check your connection and click Send a new link.

If the page says "You've asked for a link too many times in the last minute. Wait a minute and try again.", wait a minute, then ask again. On the expired-link page, click Send a new link. On the Check your email page, click Resend the link. On the sign-in page, the message shows under the email field. Submit your email address again.

If the page says "We already sent a link to" or "We already sent a few links to", you have asked for several links in a short time. The page ends with a time: "You can ask for another after" or "ask again after", and a time of day. Open the newest email from Groupthink and use the link in it. If that link has expired too, wait until the time shown, then ask again. On the expired-link page, click Send a new link. On the Check your email page, click Resend the link, or click Go Back and enter your email address again.

If a new link says We couldn't sign you in the first time you open it, something else opened it before you did. Some work email systems open the links in a message to check them. Sign in with Continue with Google, Continue with Microsoft or Continue with Apple if one of them matches your address, or set a password once you are in and use that from then on.

Which one should I use?

Any option works. If you want Groupthink to automatically join or privately record your scheduled meetings, sign in with the Google or Microsoft account that owns your calendar, and connect your calendar when prompted. If you just want to try Groupthink or record ad-hoc, any option, including Apple or email, is fine; you can connect a calendar later from Settings.

Setting or changing a password

A password is optional. Your account works without one, and the email link always works as a fallback.

  1. Click your name at the bottom of the sidebar and choose User settings, then open the Account tab. Or go straight to app.groupthink.com/settings#account.
  2. Under Account Settings, click Set Password. If you already have one, the button reads Change Password.
  3. If you are changing a password, enter your Current Password first. Then enter the new one in Password. It must be at least 12 characters.
  4. Click Save Profile.
  5. If you are setting your first password, a Confirm it's you box opens before anything is saved. See Confirming it's you.

When you change your password, Groupthink signs you out everywhere else: your other browsers, the Groupthink apps, and any AI tools you connected to your account. You stay signed in where you made the change. Sign in again on the others with your new password, or with any of the options above.

If you enter the wrong current password five times within a minute, you see Too many attempts. Try again in N seconds., where N is how long to wait. After 20 wrong tries in an hour, the wait is given in minutes. Forgot your current password? Use the Forgot password? link under the password fields to reset it by email. The sign-in page has the same option, labeled Forgot your password. If you try a password on the sign-in page too many times in a short while, it asks you to wait before trying again.

Changing your email address

  1. Click your name at the bottom of the sidebar and choose User settings, then open the Account tab.
  2. In the profile form, type the new address in Email Address.
  3. If your account has a password, a Current Password field appears under the email. Enter it. If you sign in without a password, skip this step.
  4. Click Save Profile. If you sign in without a password, a Confirm it's you box opens before anything is saved. See Confirming it's you.

If your account is managed through Google single sign-on, the field is read-only and the address is changed in Google instead.

Changing your email address does not sign you out anywhere. Sign-in links and password resets go to the new address from then on.

The email your old address gets

When the address changes, we email the old address to say so. The subject is Your Groupthink email address was changed. It shows the old address, when the change was made, and the new address with most of it hidden (only the first letters show, like j•••@n•••.com). It is sent for every email change, whatever your notification settings are. The new address does not get an email about the change.

If you made the change, you don't need to do anything.

If you didn't make the change

Click This wasn't me in that email. You don't need to be signed in. Clicking the button changes nothing by itself: it opens a page that shows what will happen and asks you to confirm. When you confirm:

  • the old address is put back on the account;
  • if the account has a password, it is signed out everywhere (browsers, the Groupthink apps, and any AI tools connected to it) and the password stops working. Click Set a new password on the page you land on, or use Forgot your password on the sign-in page, and enter the old address to get a reset link;
  • if the account has no password (you sign in with Google, Microsoft, Apple or an email link), the Groupthink apps and any AI tools connected to it are signed out. A web browser that was already signed in stays signed in, and we can't end that for you yet. If you think someone else has one open, email support@groupthink.com.

Once you're back in, look the account over. If anything looks wrong, email support@groupthink.com.

The button works for 7 days, and only once. After that it opens a page that says This link is no longer valid and nothing is changed. If the email change on your account still looks wrong, email support@groupthink.com from the old address (the one the account used to have) and a person will help you. Do the same if the page says another account is now using your old address.

If you clicked the button by mistake, close the page or click I made this change, leave it as it is. Nothing happens until you confirm.

Confirming it's you

If your account has no password, Groupthink asks you to confirm it's you before it sets a first password or changes your email address. A box titled Confirm it's you opens when you click Save Profile. It works in one of two ways, depending on how you sign in.

With a code by email. The box says "We emailed a 6-digit code to" followed by your address. Type the code in Code and click Confirm. Your change is saved straight away. If the code does not arrive or does not work, click Send a new code.

With Google or Apple. The box has a Continue with Google or Continue with Apple button. Click it and sign in with the same account you use for Groupthink. You come back to Settings with a green notice: Confirmed. Make your change and save within 10 minutes. What you typed before is gone, so enter it again and click Save Profile.

If you close the box without confirming, the form says Not saved yet. Confirm it's you to finish. and nothing is changed.

If Continue with Microsoft is refused

Groupthink remembers which Microsoft account you signed in with. That means Continue with Microsoft keeps taking you to the same Groupthink account even if your email address changes at Microsoft, or you change your email address in Groupthink.

Microsoft sign-in can be refused for two reasons, and each has its own message.

"Microsoft couldn't confirm that this account owns its email address, so we can't sign you in with it. Try another way to sign in, such as an email link." Your work or school address is on a domain your organization has not verified with Microsoft. Groupthink only accepts an address Microsoft has confirmed your organization owns. Use Sign in with email on the sign-in page with the same address. The link goes to your mailbox and signs you in to your existing account, with everything in it.

"Your Groupthink account is linked to a different Microsoft account, so we can't sign you in with this one." This happens when your company moves to a new Microsoft setup, or your Microsoft account is deleted and created again. The address is the same, but to Microsoft it is a new account. You can switch Groupthink to the new one yourself:

  1. On the sign-in page, use Sign in with email with the same address. The link signs you in to your existing account.
  2. Open Settings. Under Account Settings, find Microsoft account. It reads connected.
  3. Click Disconnect. Groupthink asks you to confirm it's you first. If you have set a password, a Current password box opens in the row: type it and click Disconnect Microsoft account. If you have not, Groupthink emails you a 6-digit code to enter, or asks you to sign in again with the Google or Apple account you use.
  4. The row now reads not connected. Sign out, then choose Continue with Microsoft. You land in the same account, and Groupthink remembers the new Microsoft account from then on.

Disconnecting does not delete anything, and it does not disconnect your Outlook calendar.

You can also do steps 2 and 3 on iPhone. In the Groupthink app, open the Settings tab and find Microsoft account under Account. It reads Connected. Tap Disconnect and confirm. The app asks for your Groupthink password, or emails you a 6-digit code to enter if you have not set one. The row then reads Not connected. The iPhone app does not have Microsoft sign-in yet, so do step 4 on the web. See Settings on iPhone.

Signing in on the desktop app

The desktop app uses the same sign-in. When you sign in from the app, you're sent to your default web browser to complete the process, then returned to the app. See the Groupthink Desktop App setup guide for the full walkthrough.
